Inhomogeneous Kinetic Alfvén Waves in the Near-Sun Solar Wind

چکیده
Abstract Intervals of intense electromagnetic, broadband plasma waves are reported in the near-Sun solar wind. These identified as kinetic Alfvén (KAWs), based on comparison between data and theory for their observed electric- to magnetic-field ratio, magnetic compressibility, a function frequency. In contrast KAW observations at 1 au, KAWs wind found be spatially inhomogeneous, preferentially occurring where ambient field experiences strong deviations from Parker spiral direction, including during switchbacks clusters switchbacks. To extent that turbulent fluctuations small scales characterized KAWs, here create an expectation KAW-driven particle heating should also inhomogeneous wind, being strongest regions KAWs. Finally, discrepancy observation is frequencies two decades above frequency effects begin manifest, possible origins this considered.

Origin of long - period Alfvén waves in the solar wind
We suggest that the observed long-period Alfvén waves in the solar wind may be generated in the solar interior due to the pulsation of the Sun in the fundamental radial mode. The period of this pulsation is about 1 hour. The pulsation causes a periodical variation of density and large-scale magnetic field, this affecting the Alfvén speed in the solar interior. Consequently the Alfvén waves with...

متن کاملEvolution of Near-Sun Solar Wind Turbulence
This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the turbulence spectrum of the solar wind in the near-Sun region R < 50R⊙, obtained from interplanetary scintillation measurements with the Ooty Radio Telescope at 327 MHz. The results clearly show that the scintillation is dominated by density irregularities of size about 100 − 500 km. The scintillation at the small-scale side of the spectrum, alth...
متن کاملAlfvén waves in the lower solar atmosphere.
The flow of energy through the solar atmosphere and the heating of the Sun's outer regions are still not understood. Here, we report the detection of oscillatory phenomena associated with a large bright-point group that is 430,000 square kilometers in area and located near the solar disk center. Wavelet analysis reveals full-width half-maximum oscillations with periodicities ranging from 126 to...
متن کاملVlasov simulation of kinetic shear Alfvén waves
The treatment of kinetic shear Alfvén waves in homogeneous magnetized plasmas by means of Vlasov simulation is examined. To this end, the driftkinetic version of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations is solved via various numerical schemes, all employing a grid in (1 + 1)D phase space. Since kinetic shear Alfvén waves are Landau damped, the use of an equidistant grid in velocity space leads to a recurre...
